Below are two fascinating historical stories about this propeller and its origins, and what remains of it today
1) Gustav Schwarz Senior was a carpenter and ran a coffin and furniture carpentry workshop in Mitte starting in 1882. In 1900, he moved north with his family and business – including a new planing and saw mill. His wife Anna took care of the funerals. But the sons had other plans.
Propellers for the "Red Baron"
During World War I, Otto Schwarz, fascinated by the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen, invented a propeller made of laminated wood with a metal edge. Among other things, this propeller powered the aircraft of Manfred von Richthofen – later celebrated as the legendary "Red Baron". Series production soon began. The small factory became an armaments supplier.
After the First World War, propellers were no longer produced. The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 not only banned Germany from having an air force but initially also prohibited the construction of civilian aircraft – due to the concern of the victorious powers that German aviation could once again be used for military purposes. The company had to reinvent itself. The brothers now manufactured furniture, gramophone casings, and chandeliers under the name Gustav Schwarz GmbH. But they continued to research. In the mid-1920s, the ban on civilian aircraft construction was lifted, and from 1928, the company again registered propeller patents.
The demand for propellers increased – and Waidmannslust became an internationally sought-after propeller location. Japanese companies acquired licenses. And Otto Schwarz's propellers now also found their way into the Zeppelin airship and the legendary DO-X seaplane. Aviation pioneers like Elly Beinhorn and Ernst Udet also relied on technology from northern Berlin.

2) Gustav Schwarz founded a coffin and furniture carpentry workshop in 1882 at Jungfernbrücke in Berlin, which was moved to Waidmannslust in 1900. His son Otto (8.(?)5.1895 - 26.9.1951) developed a propeller made of multi-layered laminated wood, which enjoyed great demand and was also produced under license abroad. In Waidmannslust, the furniture carpentry workshop became the Schwarz Propeller Factory. The Zeppelin and the large seaplane Do X were powered by the Schwarz propeller. German military aircraft were also equipped with it. (Information according to: Cemeteries in Berlin Reinickendorf, ed. BA Reinickendorf - Heimatmuseum, Berlin 2002, p. 37) The Schwarz family grave is located in the New Hermsdorf Cemetery, Frohnauer Straße 112-122, Section B Row 7 No. 4/5.

Tradition & Expertise in the Toy Trade
I discovered my passion for tin toys and enamel signs early on, and gained my first experience at flea markets and trade fairs.
In 1986, I turned my hobby into a profession – the foundation for Tintoy-World, which has also been active on eBay since 1996. With decades of experience and expertise, I have established myself as one of the leading dealers for tin toys and am now a well-established figure in the industry.
